The animal microbiome is impacting animal health. Therefore, understanding its composition and the ability to modify it is of huge interest. Of course it can only be modified if it can be measured. We can apply different genomics analysis methods to investigate or measure the microbiome composition, such as full-length 16S rRNA sequencing or shotgun sequencing.

High resolution analysis with full-length 16S rRNA sequencing

One such method to characterise the microbiome is full-length16S rRNA gene sequencing. Using our long-read 16S rRNA sequencing workflow we can classify bacteria up to genus and species level, a much higher resolution than obtained with traditional methods. Do you want to go beyond the identification level? Another novel & ground-breaking methodology to understand the microbiome is shotgun sequencing. Directly from intestinal or other samples, long-read sequencing enables the assembly of metagenomes that can be used to study virulence factors, antimicrobial resistance genes etc. This allows a more functional assessment of the microbiome.
