Sample collection for enteric disease
Sample collection is extremely important for a correct diagnostic analysis. During collection, it is important to focus on the place of the pathology. When looking to enteric infections we should focus our sampling on fresh rectal swabs or gut content. We describe different methodologies on how samples can be collected for analysis with PathoSense. As a result, purified samples will be submitted to the PathoSense laboratory.
Enteric disease in production animals: pigs & poultry
- Use the PathoSense swab to perform a rectal/cloacal sample collection
- The swab can be used to collect material from up to 5 animals, discard excessive feces to avoid clotting during purification
- Connect the swab to the filter and syringe & add the liquid to the 50 ml tube
- Mix well for 30 sec and aspirate suspension
- Transport the syringe with filter and cap in the PathoSense box
Never collect feces from the pen floor! These samples are contaminated by the environment (e.g. environment infection pressure, sow feces etc...) and do not represent the replication of pathogens inside the animal!
Enteric disease in pets
- Use the PathoSense swab to perform a rectal sample collection
- Purify the pathogens according to the provided instructions
- Transport the syringe with filter in the PathoSense sampling box
Enteric disease in large animals
- Use the PathoSense swab to perform a rectal sample collection or use a rectal glove to collect fecal material and then collect a portion of feces with the PathoSense swab
- Purify the pathogens according to the provided instructions
- Transport the syringe with filter in the PathoSense sampling box
